Mari leads a quiet vacation Bible study using Lectio Divina and Ignatian imagination through Luke 4:1–13 (Jesus tempted in the desert), connecting the passage to Lent and her own fast from sweets. Mari reflects on the three temptations—comfort/physical needs, power and false worship, and fear/testing God—highlighting how Jesus answers with Scripture and how the devil even uses Scripture. She emphasizes that knowing Scripture isn’t enough without living according to God’s ways, offers reflection questions, and shares a takeaway that the desert is preparation, not punishment, inviting listeners to lean into Lent with prayer and fasting.

Whether you're a new listener

or a longtime follower, I know

5

:

there's something here for you.

6

:

Pull up a chair and listen in for

insightful, real life conversations and

7

:

actionable steps on how to claim the.

8

Full life God created you for.

9

a Christ-centered life in today's

10

:

modern world, then this is for you.

11

:

Welcome to ever be.

12

:

Welcome back to the Ever Be

Podcast and, Welcome to Mexico.

13

:

If you are watching this on

video, you can see my background.

14

:

We are not home anymore.

15

:

We're back in my favorite place ever and

this time we're gonna be here for a while.

16

:

We're gonna be in Mexico for

a month because Trey is doing

17

:

a Spanish immersion program.

18

:

So it's kind of been a bucket

list item for us ever since we

19

:

met, like before we even started.

20

:

When we were dating, but before we even

got engaged or got married, um, my family

21

:

is Colombian and is fluent in Spanish and

Trey really wants to be fluent in Spanish

22

:

and just like have that part of our

family culture, um, be a part of his life.

23

:

So he's wanting to do an immersion

program for a while and it just

24

:

hasn't worked out until now.

25

:

And this is the perfect time for us.

26

:

So.

27

:

We're here for a week, vacationing

with some friends, and then the

28

:

last three weeks of the month

is gonna be full immersion.

29

:

Trey's got school from eight to

1:00 PM and he's like literally

30

:

just gonna be around Spanish

a hundred percent of the time.

31

:

Um, so I really hope that it helps

him, that it really just sets a really

32

:

solid foundation for conversational

Spanish and we think we'll probably

33

:

do this again in the future, probably.

34

:

Either in Columbia where my family's

from, or maybe we'll go to Spain or maybe

35

:

we'll come back to Mexico and do it here.

36

:

Um, but yeah, so that's exciting.

37

:

So yeah, so I'm recording outside on

the balcony right now and I really doubt

38

:

my microwave is picking up the sound of

the waves, but I can hear them and it's.

39

:

Which is absolutely beautiful.

40

:

It's amazing.

41

:

Um, make sure that you get to

watch the reels recaps on Instagram

42

:

so you can at least see a little

glimpse of the beautiful ocean.

43

:

If you're not part of the Kingdom

Club and are watching this full video.

44

:

Well, today we are gonna do

just a little Bible study.

45

:

So I've done this a couple times When I'm

recording a podcast on vacation, I like to

46

:

try and bring my Bible or devotional and

just spend some quiet time in the morning

47

:

when I can before the day gets started.

48

:

So I'm gonna do that with you guys today.

49

:

Just gonna dive into some lexio,

and I know last time I did this or

50

:

one of the times that I did this,

I got a lot of feedback saying that

51

:

it was really helpful for people

who maybe just didn't really know.

52

:

How to approach scripture,

how to pray with scripture.

53

:

So I hope it's gonna

be helpful in that way.

54

:

We're gonna be doing Luke

four verses one through 13.

55

:

It's the tempting of Jesus in

the desert and I thought that

56

:

was fitting for Lent clearly.

57

:

Since we're all in Lent, I hope

y'all are doing well in Lent.

58

:

I feel like this one's been a

little bit of a tough one for me.

59

:

I've definitely been tempted multiple

times, and so it's just been, it's just

60

:

reiterated that my fast was a good fast.

61

:

I give up sweets.

62

:

Um, and I've also just felt like what has

already been going on for like a month and

63

:

it's only been like 12 days, so, so yeah.

64

:

Hang in there.

65

:

You guys hang in there.

66

:

Okay.

67

:

Luke four.

68

:

Let me just open up to that.

69

:

Verses one through 13.

70

:

Grab your Bibles or just listen

along if you're driving or

71

:

cleaning or something of the sort.

72

:

So first I like to start out in a

little prayer, so let's pray together.

73

:

Name of the Father, son, holy Spirit.

74

:

Amen.

75

:

Come Holy Spirit.

76

:

We just ask you, Lord, to be

present here with us today.

77

:

We ask that you lend us a spirit of peace

and wisdom and understanding of your word.

78

:

We thank you for this moment of prayer

and being able to dive into your word

79

:

and just learn from you and be encouraged

by you, and be formed by your word.

80

:

We pray that today you would open our

hearts in a special way to hear you.

81

:

To hear a specific message that

you might have for us in our lives.

82

:

Um, and I just pray for all the listeners

today that you would just bless their day

83

:

and, um, give them an increase of faith.

84

:

Give them the gift of faith, and

just a desire to meet you in prayer

85

:

and desire to know you more deeply.

86

:

We ask this all in your most

holy name, Jesus Christ.

87

:

Amen.

88

:

The temptation of Jesus.

89

:

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned

from the Jordan and was led by the

90

:

Spirit in the wilderness, where for

40 days he was tempted by the devil.

91

:

He ate nothing at all during those days,

and when they were over he was famished.

92

:

The devil said to him, if you

are the son of God, command this

93

:

stone to become a loaf of bread.

94

:

Jesus answered him.

95

:

It is written one does

not live by bread alone.

96

:

Then the devil led him up and showed him

in an instant, all the kingdoms of the

97

:

world and the devil said to him, to you,

I will give their glory and all this

98

:

authority for it has been given over

to me and I give it to anyone I please.

99

:

If you then will worship

me, it will be all yours.

100

:

Jesus answered him.

101

:

It is written.

102

:

Worship the Lord your

God, and serve only him.

103

:

Then the devil took him to Jerusalem

and placed him on the pinnacle of

104

:

the temple, saying to him, if you

are the son of God, throw yourself

105

:

down from here, for it is written.

106

:

He will command his angels concerning

you to protect you and on their hands.

107

:

They will bear you up so that you will

not dash your foot against a stone.

108

:

Jesus answered him.

109

:

It is said, do not put the

Lord your God to the test.

110

:

When the devil had finished every test, he

departed from him until an opportune time.

111

:

Just take a moment to

allow that to sink in.

112

:

And if you're reading along with a

Bible, just glance over the words

113

:

again and see if any words or phrases.

114

:

Just kind of clinging to you

or resonate more deeply or

115

:

just lingering in your heart.

116

:

And you can feel free to pause the podcast

here if you need more time to reflect.

117

:

I'm gonna read it a second time.

118

:

And this second time, if you're able

to, you can sit back and close your

119

:

eyes and engage your imagination and

enter just into an Ignatian experience,

120

:

an Ignatian prayer of this passage.

121

:

So close your eyes and

imagine yourself in the scene.

122

:

Maybe put yourself in Jesus' shoes,

or maybe a bystander watching, or

123

:

maybe it's you in the place of Jesus.

124

:

Um, uh.

125

:

Don't put yourself as Satan

just because we don't want that.

126

:

Right?

127

:

I feel like that's pretty obvious,

but sometimes you just gotta say it.

128

:

So, all right, let's read it again.

129

:

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit returned

from the Jordan and was led by the

130

:

Spirit in the wilderness, where for

40 days he was tempted by the devil.

131

:

He ate nothing at all during those days,

and when they were over, he was famished.

132

:

The devil said to him, if you

are the son of God, command the

133

:

stone to become a loaf of bread.

134

:

Jesus answered him.

135

:

It is written one does

not live by bread alone.

136

:

Then the devil led him up and showed him

in an instant, all the kingdoms of the

137

:

world and the devil said to him, to you,

I will give their glory and all this

138

:

authority for it has been given over

to me and I give it to anyone I please.

139

:

If you then will worship

me, it will be all yours.

140

:

Jesus answered him.

141

:

It is written, worship the Lord

your God, and serve only him.

142

:

Then the devil took him to Jerusalem

and placed him on the pinnacle of

143

:

the temple, saying to him, if you

are the son of God, throw yourself

144

:

down From here, for it is written.

145

:

He will command his angels

concerning you to protect you.

146

:

And on their hands, they will

bear you up so that you will not

147

:

dash your foot against a stone.

148

:

Jesus answered him.

149

:

It is said, do not put the

Lord your God to the test.

150

:

When the devil had finished every test, he

departed from him until an opportune time.

151

:

Amen.

152

:

So what are we getting from this passage?

153

:

I'm just gonna scan through it

again and just kind of share

154

:

some things that stood out to me.

155

:

Just some reflections.

156

:

So first thing that stands out

to me is that the evil one tempts

157

:

him in three different ways.

158

:

He tempts him.

159

:

With desires of the flesh, those

like basic needs food, right?

160

:

Jesus had been fasting for 40 days

and then the devil said to him, if

161

:

you're the Son of God, command the

stone to become a loaf of bread.

162

:

He tempted him with food, which is

just such a basic like carnal need.

163

:

It's such a basic human need of

survival that I think it's so fleshy.

164

:

It's just so easy.

165

:

To be tempted with food and that's,

it just reminds me of our Lenin fasts.

166

:

A lot of us are fasting

from food in different ways.

167

:

Like I said earlier,

I'm fasting from sweets.

168

:

Um, we fast on Fridays from meat

ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

169

:

We, um, fast from.

170

:

Our usual meals of the day

and have a reduced meal that

171

:

we're consuming during the day.

172

:

And so we feel this like physical

hunger that reminds us, just like

173

:

of our humanity and our weakness.

174

:

And I don't know about you guys,

but the days that we are required

175

:

to fast as a church are the

days that I feel the hungriest.

176

:

But the days that are just a

regular day, I'll go until like 10,

177

:

11:00 AM without eating anything

and I'll not even realize it.

178

:

And so.

179

:

Yeah, it's just a

reminder of our humanity.

180

:

And it just reminds me here the way the

devil tempts Jesus in all these ways

181

:

that Jesus, too was human, and the devil

tried to tempt him as he would a human.

182

:

So it reveals to us how the

devil can tempt us and trick us

183

:

one with earthly things, with th

desires of the flesh like food.

184

:

Um, two, the devil led him up and

showed him in an instant, all the

185

:

kingdoms of the world and said

to him, I will give you glory and

186

:

authority over all these kingdom.

187

:

He tempted Jesus with power, which

is just hilarious given that Jesus

188

:

is the literals son of God, God

himself, and the devil knows this.

189

:

Um, yet he also knows Jesus is fully

human and he tries to tempt him There.

190

:

And so this, I feel like, represents

those kind of more intangible attachments

191

:

that we tend to have as human beings,

whether that's power, status, riches,

192

:

um, control, fame, you know what I mean?

193

:

Like those kind of more intangible

temptations that we feel

194

:

like lured towards sometimes.

195

:

And then he says, in return, right, if

you worship me, I'll give you all of this.

196

:

So the first one here, the first.

197

:

Temptation was tempting of food, and

that was a temptation to break his

198

:

fast right, to break his commitment

to the Lord, to disrupt his faith.

199

:

The second temptation here is a temptation

of power and worship, so he's not only

200

:

tempting him with, um, wanting more power.

201

:

As if the devil actually had

authority to give him all of that.

202

:

And then he says, if you worship

me, then it'll all be yours.

203

:

So now he adds a stipulation and

he tries to get Jesus to fall by

204

:

worshiping someone other than the Lord.

205

:

And.

206

:

It might not be so obvious in our

lives, like we might not have the devil

207

:

appearing to us, I hope, saying, if

you worship me, you'll have everything.

208

:

But in different ways, the world

does tempt us, and that's the the

209

:

evil one through the world, right?

210

:

That the world says, if you do

this, then you'll have it all.

211

:

If you become this person,

then you'll have happiness.

212

:

If you do.

213

:

You know, it just tempts us with different

things and makes us believe that if

214

:

we do certain things or act certain

ways or value certain things or become

215

:

certain people, then all happiness or

power or status will be given to us.

216

:

So that's an example of how we may

encounter this in our life and choose to

217

:

actually worship something other than God.

218

:

Then lastly, the devil took him to

Jerusalem and placed him on the pinnacle

219

:

of the temple and said to the son,

said to him, if you are the son of God,

220

:

throw yourself down from here, for it

is written, the angels will protect you.

221

:

So here, I feel like he is tempting Jesus.

222

:

With, I mean like physical safety,

like just me as a human being.

223

:

I'm like, that would be scary if

I'm like sitting on the top of

224

:

the temple, no protection, and

I could fall off at any moment.

225

:

And, and the devil is saying like, fall

down and the angels will catch you.

226

:

Like there's definitely an element

of fear and coercion there that the

227

:

devil is trying to instill, but he

also, what's really happening, he's

228

:

trying to get Jesus to test God.

229

:

and to shake his faith.

230

:

Right?

231

:

But Jesus responds with so

much confidence in the Lord.

232

:

Gosh, it's just admirable like

I wish we could have that He's

233

:

in this compromising situation.

234

:

And Jesus himself could save himself.

235

:

We know this.

236

:

He's miraculous.

237

:

He could save himself.

238

:

He could push the devil

down, like, but he doesn't.

239

:

He has an opportunity here and he takes

this opportunity to make a statement and

240

:

to show us what true faith and confidence

in God his heavenly Father looks like.

241

:

All he says to him is, it is said, do

not put the Lord your God to the test.

242

:

He doesn't even flinch At this

threat because he knows his

243

:

father is already protecting him.

244

:

He knows that evil one doesn't

have power over the Lord, so

245

:

he doesn't fall into that fear.

246

:

The evil one tries to trick us with fear.

247

:

So often you guys, we just fall

into this fears of like, what if?

248

:

What if?

249

:

What if?

250

:

What if?

251

:

What if?

252

:

What if this happens?

253

:

What if this happens?

254

:

And that those spiraling

thoughts are not of the Lord?

255

:

So I think that is another thing that

really resonates with us as humans.

256

:

This fear that grips us sometimes.

257

:

We all have different fears, we all

have certain fears, and it grips

258

:

us and it pulls us away from the

Lord whether we realize it or not.

259

:

Um, and so in those moments of

fear, just turn towards the Lord.

260

:

Say, Jesus, I trust in you.

261

:

I surrender myself to you.

262

:

Take care of everything.

263

:

Um.

264

:

Yeah, and just give it all to

the Lord and don't give into

265

:

those spiraling thoughts of fear.

266

:

And then when the devil finished

every test, he departed from

267

:

him until an opportune time.

268

:

And so the devil was like,

all right, I tried and I left.

269

:

And another thing I wanna note here

is that one of these efforts the

270

:

devil made was to counteract Jesus.

271

:

So he even like.

272

:

Fought with Jesus, like bartered

with Jesus after tenting him.

273

:

And Jesus retaliating.

274

:

He uses scripture.

275

:

The devil even uses scripture

to combat Christ's arguments.

276

:

So yeah, in verse nine, the

devil literally says, For it is

277

:

written, he will command his angels

concerning you to protect you.

278

:

So the devil is trying to use

scripture to tempt Christ even more

279

:

and trying to use it as a reason

for Jesus falling into his trap.

280

:

He's saying, no, the, if you command it,

the angels will come and protect you.

281

:

You just have to command it.

282

:

But Jesus responds again with

scripture and says, do not put

283

:

the Lord your God to the test.

284

:

I think what this reveals about this

is that even the devil knows the truth.

285

:

Even the devil knows scripture.

286

:

Even the devil knows the Lord.

287

:

So us just knowing scripture, just

knowing the Lord isn't enough.

288

:

Right.

289

:

And this is again, I think where.

290

:

Our Catholic and Protestant brothers

and sisters differ a little bit,

291

:

um, because I know in the Protestant

denomination, the belief is that

292

:

you are just saved by your faith in

Jesus, just by believing in Jesus.

293

:

And that is absolutely a component.

294

:

We have to believe that Jesus

is true, is our savior, and has

295

:

opened the gates of heaven for us.

296

:

But Even Satan believes in Jesus.

297

:

Even Satan knows the power of the

Lord, and he knows who the Lord is.

298

:

He knows he's got Almighty, and so us

just having this faith and believing.

299

:

The Lord is not enough.

300

:

We need to believe in him and we need

to walk in his ways and we need to

301

:

live in accordance to how God wants

us to live, how he created us to live.

302

:

And we learn this through scripture

and through tradition of the church,

303

:

through the teachings he left us with,

with the apostles that have been passed

304

:

down for 2000 years, and through the

word that he left us in scripture, so.

305

:

Let that be your reflection for

the day, your encouragement,

306

:

know the Lord and follow him.

307

:

We need both.

308

:

I hope that this was helpful to you.

309

:

I hope that it just gave you some

nuggets to really chew on and

310

:

reflect on during the rest of Lent.

311

:

In what ways are we being tempted?

312

:

In what ways do we relate, um, to

the conversation that we had today.

313

:

And I'm also just gonna leave you

with some reflection questions that I.

314

:

Wrote down here.

315

:

So this was actually the Bible study

that we did for our Kingdom Club.

316

:

So our Patreon group meets once a month

on Zoom and we do a Bible study together.

317

:

Our Kingdom Club Bible study, we actually

did this Bible study together and I have

318

:

some questions that I pulled out for them

to reflect on during our Bible study.

319

:

So I'm just gonna read them to you

guys as well in case you want further

320

:

reflection in case you wanna journal with

them later or pause and pray with them.

321

:

Here you go.

322

:

The spirit led Jesus into the desert.

323

:

Why do you think God sometimes

leads us into hard or dry seasons?

324

:

What does desert look like

in your life right now?

325

:

What feels busy, lonely,

distracting, quiet or uncomfortable?

326

:

The first temptation

is about comfort bread.

327

:

What do you tend to turn to when

you're stressed or uncomfortable?

328

:

Jesus responds to

temptation with scripture.

329

:

What does that tell us about

how we can fight temptation?

330

:

What is one thing your lentin fast

might be revealing about you so far?

331

:

If this lent is your desert, what do

you hope God does in you before Easter?

332

:

And then just to wrap it up, a little

takeaway that I had written here

333

:

in my notes from our Bible study

was that the takeaway from this is

334

:

that the desert is not punishment,

but it's actually preparation.

335

:

The spirit led Jesus to the desert on

purpose for a purpose, and we are walking.

336

:

Through Lent with purpose for a

purpose or we should be right.

337

:

We're called to.

338

:

And so harder dry seasons are

not a sign that God is distant,

339

:

but it's actually often where

he's doing his most intentional

340

:

work, stripping us of our earthly

attachments and bringing us closer.

341

:

Into union with him.

342

:

Um, and this desert specifically

reveals what we reach for when we

343

:

are uncomfortable, what we rely on

for comfort or validation or control.

344

:

Um, and Lent is doing that in us.

345

:

This desert, this season of

Lent is doing that in us.

346

:

So this is our call to have deeper

dependence with God, um, and if we really

347

:

lean in and keep our fasts and our prayer.

348

:

We will see a shift in our faith, in

our heart, this land, and we will see

349

:

a shift in our relationship with him.

350

:

So I just pray that for all of you, keep

leaning in and hopefully this was helpful.

351

:

Um, love doing Bible study with you guys.
