Speaker:

Hi friend, welcome to Through

the Thorns, a Lenten devotional

2

:

written by yours truly, Mari Wagner.

3

:

And throughout this devotional,

we will be meditating on the

4

:

different sorrowful mysteries of

the Rosary every Tuesday of Lent.

5

:

Um, and really we're going to be

entering into Jesus's passion and love.

6

:

Way of the cross in a more personal and

intimate way through Ignatian meditation.

7

:

This is an imaginative form of prayer that

really allows us to enter into a scene and

8

:

maybe meet Jesus in a more intimate way.

9

:

So all you have to do today and throughout

these meditations is show up, um, open

10

:

your heart and quiet your mind, um,

and really just allow God to work.

11

:

I'm going to be leading us on these

meditations and you're encouraged to

12

:

pray a rosary afterwards, reflecting

on the sorrowful mysteries and

13

:

just taking today's meditation,

to heart as you pray, your rosary.

14

:

Now on this first week of Lent, we

are praying with the agony in the

15

:

garden and I encourage you if you're

able to, uh, to go to a comfortable

16

:

place where it's quiet and you have

the freedom to just close your eyes.

17

:

Maybe open your hands to receive

all God has for you today.

18

:

Maybe you lay down, or sit down

in a prayer chair, but really just

19

:

encourage you to find a place that

you can be comfortable and prayerful.

20

:

All right, let's get started.

21

:

In the name of the Father and

the Son and the Holy Spirit.

22

:

Amen.

23

:

Take a few deep breaths, inhale, exhale,

24

:

close your eyes, and ask the Holy

Spirit to open your heart as we

25

:

journey into the Garden of Gethsemane.

26

:

Picture yourself walking besides Jesus.

27

:

It's nighttime and the garden is

dark, only lit by the faint glow of

28

:

the moon and scattered stars and you

can feel the cool air on your skin.

29

:

There's a breeze and you can hear the

rustling of the leaves in the wind.

30

:

Maybe you have chills on your

arms from the cold and you're

31

:

walking in silence next to the

Lord and you sense this heaviness.

32

:

This in the air, this

heaviness in Jesus's heart.

33

:

He looks at you and asks you to stay and

pray with him for a while, but something

34

:

is different about him this time.

35

:

This time his eyes look sorrowful

and he seems a bit unsettled.

36

:

He moves a short distance away to

pray on his own, but you can hear his

37

:

prayers catching a few sentences here

and there, and you hear him calling

38

:

out to the father saying, Abba, Father,

all things are possible for you.

39

:

Take this cup from me, yet not

my will, but yours be done.

40

:

You wonder what he might be in

anguish about, what he might be

41

:

asking the father to take away.

42

:

You're kneeling nearby and just watching

him, noticing the anguish that is etched

43

:

on his face, the way his body is trembling

under the weight of what's to come.

44

:

Just allow yourself to feel the

intensity of this moment as he falls

45

:

to the ground in prayer, prostrating

himself in front of the Lord, his

46

:

tears streaming down his face.

47

:

You can see his heart is deeply

moved yet deep in anguish.

48

:

His love for you is so great

that he willingly embraces

49

:

the suffering that is to come.

50

:

Suddenly you notice his sweat

turning into drops of blood.

51

:

The way of the world's sin is

pressing down on him, and yet he

52

:

continues to pray, continues to

surrender, calling out to the Father.

53

:

What do you feel as you witness this?

54

:

What do you hear him say to the Father?

55

:

Can you feel this heaviness in his heart?

56

:

Yet this deep trust that

he has for God's plan.

57

:

Jesus rises from his prayer and

begins walking back towards you.

58

:

And as he walks back, he meets your eyes.

59

:

You notice he looks

exhausted but determined.

60

:

What does he say to you?

61

:

What do you want to say to him?

62

:

How can you unite your sufferings and

anxieties of the future to Jesus's

63

:

heart in this night in the garden?

64

:

Let us pray.

65

:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

creator of heaven and earth, and

66

:

in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our

Lord, who was conceived by the Holy

67

:

Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,

suffered under Pontius Pilate, was

68

:

crucified, died, and was buried.

69

:

He descended into hell, and on the

third day, he rose again from the dead.

70

:

He ascended into heaven and

is seated at the right hand

71

:

of God, the Father Almighty.

72

:

From there he will come to

judge the living and the dead.

73

:

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy

Catholic Church, the communion of saints,

74

:

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection

of the body, and life everlasting.

75

:

Amen.

76

:

For the intentions of our Holy Father,

Pope Francis, and all the priests.

77

:

Our Father, who art in

heaven, hallowed be thy name.

78

:

Thy kingdom come, thy will be

done, on earth as it is in heaven.

79

:

Give us this day our daily bread,

and forgive us our trespasses, as we

80

:

forgive those who trespass against us.

81

:

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

82

:

Amen.

83

:

For an increase in faith, hope, and love.

84

:

Hail Mary, full of grace,

the Lord is with thee.

85

:

Blessed art thou among women, and

blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

86

:

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us

sinners now and at the hour of our death.

87

:

Amen.

88

:

Hail Mary, full of grace,

the Lord is with thee.

89

blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it

:

was in the beginning, is now, and

ever shall be, world without end.
